The IT Crowd is back, and Roy still loves geeky tees! http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1356 Friday night saw the return of Graham Lineham’s excellent ‘The IT Crowd‘ for it’s third season. Over the past few seasons I think I may well have enjoyed all the geeky in-jokes, references and props more than the storylines and acting (though I still enjoy that too), and it seems that this year is no exception as the IT department has had a makeover that seems to involve even more stickers than the back of my laptop.

Following on with a grand tradition, I Sky+’d the episode (though forgot to record the HD version) so that I could go back and chronicle the tees Roy wore in S3E1. The first one was really easy, I’d actually already spotted it in the advert. It’s a bit of a classic in the indie tee world, “Musical Elitism Venn Diagram Shirt (Music I Used to Like)” by Diesel Sweeties, who I noticed also have an ‘I [screw] robots’ sticker lurking in the background too.

The second was a bit harder, a black and orange tee where you never really got a decent look at the design. I was about you give up hope when I noticed that there was a shot taken from behind Roy’s head that revealed a J!NX logo on the neck of the tee, which actually made it very easy to find the tee. It’s called “The Cake is a Lie,” which is a statement that left me slightly perplexed, so I Googled it as they suggested, and now I get it. What? You thought I was going to explain it to you? So, not exactly a huge amount of tee-sleuthing to be done this week, a nice gentle starter I guess, let’s see what comes up next week in episode 2. There’s not too much else in the gallery, just a few shots from different angles, but I figure that since I’ve taken the pictures I might as well upload them.

4 New Hoodies from Tolky Monkys… you NEED to look at these. http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1326 I got an e-mail from Nestor over at Tolky Monkys about some new hoodies that they’ve got on sale, and I just expected to find their regular designs has been transferred over to a hoodie. That would have been perfectly fine, its what most people do, but TM decided to put a little bit more effort in and have come up with this absolutely awesome collection of hoodies based on three new characters, with a re-editing of an older one called Hikiko Pacman. Perhaps I’m going a little bit overboard with the hyerbole, but I am seriously impressed with this collection of hoodies, hell, I might even buy one myself. Check out all four hoodies here and weigh in at under €50 a piece, and click through to the gallery for a boatload of pictures.

Go Ape Shirts are Battleready… will not battle with CBS http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1244 Here’s the latest news from Go Ape Shirts: It’s that time again! “Battleready” by the very talented Derek M Ballard is now up for sale. It is a jumbo print and our first on American Apparel’s organic and sustainable shirts. In more unfortunate news, a lot of you have noticed that the “Bar Trekkin’” shirt suddenly went missing. This shirt has been challenged by CBS, owners of the Star Trek franchise. While we believe that the design is a parody protected by law, we are complying with their demand. Lastly, it is holiday shopping season again already! I will do my best to get to the post office once every three business days at the longest. When you place an order, if you received a confirmation email from PayPal, I have received your order. Sorry if this is not clear. Personally, I think that the Bar Trekkin’ tee was well within the grounds of parody, but I can understand why GAS can’t fight it. Battleready looks pretty cool too, eh guys? Go Ape Shirts

Self Harm by Chateau Roux [Reviews] http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1237 Here is the last of the three tees that Chateau Roux sent me a month or so ago. If you’re wondering why I haven’t yet mentioned their packaging, its because I have deemed it nice enough to have a post dedicated purely to the packaging, which will be coming up sometime in the near future, unless I forget, in which case it just probably won’t turn up.

As you can probably tell from the text on the te, this design is from the ’self harm’ range that has been getting the Chateau Roux crew into a little trouble lately. The name of the range does not refer to people that unfortunately decide that cutting themselves is the only way to get some control in their life, instead, it just means that the buyer can take the DIY approach to giving these tees a bit of roughed up action with a piece of sand paper (also known as ‘glass paper’, as I learned in France) that is supplied with each tee. I still haven’t dared attack the tee, but that’s because I’ve got no balls and even less talent, so I’m afraid of ruining a very nice shirt, but its still a very cool concept, and they’ve clearly created each design with destroying them in mind.

As always, the quality level is exceptional, I know that they spent a long time in their early days sourcing and creating a tee that they felt was just right, and I think they can be justifiably proud of their quality level. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to do it considerable damage with some sandpaper and whatever other implement you can find in your house to truly make your tee unique. Costiness=£35 Buy it at Chateau Roux

Say Hello to Twon Clothing http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1215 It’s nice to see someone trying to design a tee that is all about New York without having any reference to the iconic ‘I [heart]…’ design. Twon continues the NYC loves throughout their latest range, the best word I can think of to describe it with is ‘fresh’, check out the gallery (in which they take a swipe at the ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ crowd) and see if you agree. J3Concepts & Wotto hit Ink Hound http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1214 Ink Hound hit their second week with a release from a couple of designers you should be pretty familiar with, J3Concepts and Wotto. The tee is Wotto’s (as if you couldn’t tell), and the hat is by J3 (as if you couldn’t tell). They were actually rocking a half price sale last week which I forgot to tell you about, but they’re hardly breaking the bank this week with their ‘full’ prices of $12 for a tee ($14 for organic), $16 for a hat, and $30 for a hoodie. You’ve got until Tuesday next week to pick them up, because after that, they’re gone.

Cocaine Blows by Local Celebrity [Review] http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1212 This is the last of the tees that Local Celebrity sent in a rather large box, and whilst I wish that I could say that I was saving the best for last, I must admit that I’m not particularly partial to this tee. I don’t have a problem with the design, the text and the image are both fine, I just have a problem wearing a tee that has cocaine on it, even if the message on the tee is anti-drugs. I don’t wanto to preach to people even if I think that taking cocaine is a bad thing, and I’m sure that more than a few people would misinterpret the design as me actually being pro-drugs, and frankly, I’d rather just not get into that whole hornet’s nest.

Clearly, to say that I’m a fan of this design would be a bit of a lie, but I accepted long ago that HYA isn’t just about me and what I like anymore, and I have to accept that there are people out there who like this kind of thing, even if they are just rather ballsier than I am in their anti-drugs stance. The colourway is pretty neat, red, black and white always work well together, and the design is classic Local Celebrity, simple and solid, with a slightly retro feel to it.

I may not love the subject of this tee, but I am still very much in love with the quality of Local Celebrity’s t-shirts, they rank amongst the best I’ve ever worn, and as regular readers will know, that’s a lot of t-shirts! Print quality is excellent too, I’m pretty sure its a water-based ink since you can barely feel it on the tee, and I know that these tees last because the first lot they sent me are still going strong despite reasonably heavy rotation in my tee wearing. Gaston Caba x Outer Space http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1210 I got an e-mail from a guy called Gaston Caba, an Argentinian artist who seems to specialise exclusively in ‘good’ art, to tell me about the designs that he’s made for a hitherto unkown (to me) brand called Outer Space, who hail from Taiwan. I guess that you could say that almost all the designs are logo tees, but since Outer Space is a fairly generic term I think that you could easily wear it and people wouldn’t have a clue that you were promoting a brand. I really like Gaston’s style, there’s something really fun, cute and retro about it. There’s a big gallery after the cut, with some great images, so you might want to check that out. Geoskullz by Viva Ortegacy http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1136 I’m not actually all that in love with the design as an illustration, but I think that something simple like this skull design works really, really well as a t-shirt, y’know? Newvember at Threadless http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1130 I know that its a good week for graphic releases over at Threadless, but the shirt above is probably my fave since it make me chortle, even if I think that they could have made a bit more effort on the design of the tee (who designs the text tees based on submitted phrases?). I’ve noticed that the links in the newsletter and blog pages now go to their respective sites, i.e. if a tee is from the Select range, it goes through to the new Select Series site, I’m not sure why I thought that was interesting, but I do. 6 hoodies going cheap(ish) at Limitees http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1128 I know that €50 doesn’t sound cheap, but it is a substantial discount on what you’d usually be paying if you were to buy one of these hoodies at their regular price. Say Hello To Skilla Fashion http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1116 There seems to be a split between me liking and not liking the designs of Skilla Fashion. I like the use of foil, and the tee with ‘Birth of a Hero’ text written in Birth Of A Hero type is pretty clever (has anyone done a line with the names of fonts written in the named font?), but then some of the designs just aren’t working for me, not that there’s anything particularly wrong with them, I’m just not blown away. Take Me To Your Reader by Cameesa [Reviews] http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1011 I don’t think I’ve mentioned Cameesa before on Hide Your Arms, which is borderline criminal because they’re a website that are genuinely doing something different in a world where so many t-shirt sites seem to be pretty much the same. In case you hadn’t heard from everyone else, Cameesa are a t-shirt design competition, except that they ‘crowdfund’ the t-shirts which are released. What does crowdfunding mean? It means that instead of just voting for a tee to say you like it, you can put your money where your mouth is and actually pledge money to the design and if enough people do the same, the design will be produced, you receive a copy of the tee, and even a small dividend every time the tee is purchased. Admittedly, you probably won’t become rich by backing t-shirt designers on Cameesa, but I do think that it helps to create a sense of community on the site, and I’d presume that it also helps to ensure that Cameesa can keep business running smoothly.

Of course, like all design competitions, the thing that matters above all is the the quality of the designs that they produce and whether Cameesa can attract designers who know what makes a popular t-shirt. I like this tee, and I like what else is in their catalogue, so I don’t think that Cameesa have much to worry about in that regard. Obviously this is a tee based on a pun, so its got that going for it, but it does stand up well on its own too.

Cameesa seem to have quality levels down too, and by down, I mean that they’re good, so… the levels are high? The tee has the look and feel of an American Apparel tee, which is largely because the tee is by American Apparel, so you know what you’re in for in that regard. Print quality is pretty impressive too, I couldn’t find anything to complain about, and I looked pretty hard. Costiness=$17.99 Buy it at Cameesa

Tea Stain leaves a mark http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1007 You know I love a good pun, and Tea Stain certainly is a good pun. Here’s their background: Tea Stain Clothing began one sunny summer day, not too long ago. Unsatisfied with loud designs and over-the-top clothing, they took a stand. They decided to provide an alternative to the frenzied designs dominating the marketplace. They believe: Your favorite shirt should not make you a walking billboard. People should have a stylish alternative to the $80 t-shirt. Clothing should not distract from what is most important… the person wearing it. Thus, Tea Stain Clothing was born. In ancient times tea staining was a method of bringing subtle color change to garments. Tea Stain Clothing uses the same subtle approach in design. They design each style with our mission in mind, ensuring our clothes are fun, comfortable and fashionable. It’s true, their designs certainly aren’t too loud, and the colourways aren’t crazy, but they do sell some well put together tees, and its great to see them giving some money to charity as well. A hoodie-blazer-vest-thing by desirapesta [Etsy] http://andrewbowness.com/items/view/1006 Joe of Fantastic Bonanza! fame may well have semi-retired from blogging, but clearly he’s still as obsessed with clothing as I am, because he pointed me in the direction of this very interesting piece. I’m still not totally sold on the idea of a hoodie and a blazer making sweet-love and producing hybrid offspring, but it doesn’t mean I’m not intrigued by the idea. This example of the breed certainly annoys me a lot less than others I’ve seen, it looks really high quality, and if you think that you can pull it off then it might be worth your $265 of hard-earned cash.
